The joy of a summer song
How it seems to last all night long
With the subtle sound of crickets
Hidden way down deep in the thickets
And the katydid up high – in the trees
With their song drifting on the breeze
The croak of an old bullfrog
Way off in the fog
I can hear an owl as it hoots
And see a star as it shoots
If you sit so very still
You can hear the song of a whippoorwill
As the song of summer starts to fade
How many times has it played?
As the sun begins to rise
The summer song ends in surprise
Another song, I do pray
But you can’t hear these songs during the day
Only at night, I must say.
