Beloved little Phoenix,
You’re a transient glow
Yet inspiring hope
As you burn through the snow
You’re an absolute vision
In this blurring reality
Defying the elements
With strength and vitality
I ponder your wonder
What a gift it has layed
For you add bright beauty
To the days grayest shades
Yet swift as you’ve come
You fade like an ember
Still warm, were your wings
In the bitter December
NOTE: At the time I made this poem, I was in the super-maximum security unit at Menard C.C… It housed 15 of us prisoners out of the thousands of others. The windows are covered with sheet metal shingles so we can not look down. But birds make their way in and rest on the shingles… One particularly cold and gloomy day, a cardinal made its way into the box. I watched its beauty for at least 4-5 minutes. Which is very rare since they are vigilant birds and move fast… It was a gift, from whom? I do not know. But it was a gift. So I made this poem.
